Deerfield CPC approves cemetery grant, conservation fund

Other Committee · Meeting of January 14, 2026

Deerfield's Community Preservation Committee approved a Mill River Cemetery restoration grant and advanced a $100,000 conservation fund on a divided vote. The committee voted unanimously to fund Laurel Hill Cemetery repairs after member Lily Dwight sought assurance the work was restoration, not routine maintenance, which the CPC cannot fund. On the proposed conservation fund, presented by member Julie for the Open Space Committee, the panel voted 4-2 to accept draft spending conditions and 3-2 to recommend funding pending Town Meeting approval, with Jeffrey Brown and Peter James abstaining both times.

James said he wants to see draft conservation restrictions before any land purchase closes. Separately, the committee tabled a Friends of Deerfield painting-restoration grant until the applicant supplies an updated timeline and a written commitment from PVMA guaranteeing public access, with a vote expected January 28.
