Senior Center Board Votes to Study New Structure
Other Committee · Meeting of September 24, 2026
DEERFIELD — South County Senior Center panel votes to study becoming a property-owning entity. Chair Joyce Palmer-Fortune led a 3-0 roll-call vote forming a subcommittee to research converting the Deerfield, Sunderland and Whately senior center from an inter-municipal agreement into a consortium or district, after the center lost a chance to buy a nearby building because no town could purchase it jointly. Director Jen also reported a $5,650 fiscal 2026 deficit driven by a midyear health insurance spike, with a proposed makeup assessment asking Deerfield for $2,825 and Whately and Sunderland for $1,412.50 each.
"That's a bruise that was starting to heal," Palmer-Fortune said of reopening the funding split so soon after Deerfield voters rejected a shared rental site last year. The center served 784 people across 39,170 visits in fiscal 2026, a nearly 25 percent jump in overall people served.
