Senior Center Board Pitches Amherst Road Move
Other Committee · Meeting of January 12, 2026
Deerfield's Finance Committee and Select Board hear a senior center relocation pitch that would cost the average taxpayer $50 more a year. The South County Senior Center's Board of Oversight, chaired by Louis Palmer-Fortune with Deerfield's Trevor McDaniel and Sunderland's Daniel Murphy, compared four sites for the agency, which serves Deerfield, Sunderland and Whately. Leasing 12,000 square feet at 112 Amherst Road, priced near $168,000 a year, tested as the strongest option against a $5 million renovation of 8 Conway Street and a $15.9 million new build the board called "cost prohibited." The combined three-town operating budget would jump to $442,912, more than double this year's $212,865.
"This is not sustainable," the center's director said, citing 2,000 square feet of current space against a documented need for 17,600. No votes were taken.
