Panel previews two tax overrides for town meeting
Other Committee · Meeting of April 23, 2026
Deerfield liaison panel previews two tax overrides bound for town meeting. Finance Committee liaison Julie Chalfant said the town has drained free cash covering operating costs and now needs voters to approve a $103,000 override for a South County Senior Center move to Sunderland and a second override, worth $400,000 to $500,000, to fund regional ambulance service through taxes instead of one-time money. "We are scraping up the nickels from under the couch cushions," Chalfant said.
School committee liaison Carrie reported a 3.81 percent budget increase built on cutting reading interventionist and sixth-grade teaching positions as enrollment declines. The Community Preservation Committee will seek $5,000 to store a vandalized triptych painting removed from St. James Church, with full restoration pegged at $50,000.
The panel itself took no votes beyond accepting minutes and setting its next meeting for May 28.
