Deerfield panel details farmland-to-senior-housing state proposal
Other Committee · Meeting of June 3, 2026
Deerfield senior housing panel details a farmland-to-retirement housing pitch for the state. The Ad Hoc Senior Housing Committee reviewed a two-page proposal, drafted at the request of state Sen. Joe Comerford, seeking dedicated state funding to let aging farmers retire into subsidized senior housing while placing their land into agricultural preservation.
The plan cites a state finding that 36.6 percent of Massachusetts principal producers, 3,719 people, are of retirement age and steward 112,464 acres. Members debated but set aside a proposal, urged by Massachusetts Housing Partnership representative Christine Mador, to form a separate municipal housing trust; member Lili Dwight, a Deerfield Land Trust co-founder, called it "a lot of work." Triad coordinator Sharon Patrick warned that federal home heating fuel assistance has been eliminated from the federal budget, telling the committee, "We would never let anybody freeze." The committee approved its May 27 minutes and adjourned at 6:05 p.m. on unanimous roll-call votes.
