Deerfield CPC Approves $100,000 Conservation Fund Grant
Other Committee · Meeting of February 18, 2026
Deerfield's Community Preservation Committee unanimously advanced $100,000 for a new conservation fund and finalized 1821 Meeting House restoration terms. Committee members Peter James and Julie Caswell revised a grant agreement letter after a January 14 vote passed only 6-2 with two abstentions; the reworked version requires the Conservation Commission chair to sign as recipient and report spending annually. Members debated a "springing renewal provision" that effectively makes the meeting house's 30-year preservation restriction permanent; Lely Dwight asked whether it "tied the hands" of future residents, while James called it "a very cute way of dealing with an end-around to the Massachusetts Historical Commission." The committee also voted 8-0 to recommend a Mill River Cemetery grant to town meeting, pending Historical Commission confirmation that the cemetery, with burials from 1801 to 2024, is historically significant.
