Senior Center Board Adds Advisory Seats
Other Committee · Meeting of May 28, 2026
DEERFIELD — South County Senior Center board reviews a failed relocation vote and floats owning its own building someday. The Board of Oversight, which meets for Deerfield, Sunderland and Whately, took no formal votes May 28 but discussed adding three town-appointed advisory members from each town, finalized the towns' inter-municipal agreement as effective Dec. 16, 2025, and debated forming a consortium or district so the center could eventually own property instead of relying on host towns' buildings. One member said the group needs to avoid letting "one town's finance committee be a veto on the Board of Oversight." Director Jennifer warned that an expected 25 percent cut to Title III elder-services funding by 2029, plus a proposed state income tax cut from 5 percent to 4 percent, will likely push more seniors toward the center.
Early renovation estimates for a future building ranged from roughly $2 million to $5 million. Operational changes, including reduced Friday hours and the end of a subsidized foot clinic, take effect July 1.
