Deerfield panel to seek Select Board OK for building-removal bids
Other Committee · Meeting of June 10, 2026
Deerfield senior housing panel asks Select Board to bid out removal of two aging buildings for $1. The Ad Hoc Senior Housing Committee voted 3-0 to accept its June 3 minutes, then Chair Lili Dwight carried a letter to the Select Board requesting authorization to seek a party to remove and relocate the former St. James Church and rectory at 83-85 North Main Street, with the town conveying the buildings for nominal $1 consideration.
Consultant Alex Galloway said a hazardous-materials survey found asbestos in floor tile and caulking and estimated abatement costs of $210,000 to $280,000, calling the findings "not as bad as I thought it was going to be." The letter cites a Greenfield YMCA building relocated to a Barre brewery and farm as a model. Separately, members drafted questions for Triad coordinator Sharon Pachorek on heating-assistance eligibility and capacity as federal funding grows uncertain, and the committee voted 3-0 to adjourn at 5:56 p.m.
