Deerfield Energy Conservation Committee defers wastewater solar project and plans August goal-setting session. Meeting by video conference on July 16, the committee unanimously approved its June 17 minutes and set its next meeting for August 20 at 4 p.m., with written committee goals as the primary agenda item. Member Ryan Kingston summarized a report from developer PV Squared finding that a 43.5-kilowatt solar installation covering both wastewater treatment plant buildings would cost $170,000, yield only $8,000 in first-year savings, and carry a payback period beyond 10 years now that a $50,000 federal tax credit has been eliminated, leading the committee to table further pursuit without grant support.
Member Bruce Dolan argued a behind-the-meter array still offers resilience value for a high-consumption facility: "If we know that this array accounts for 40 percent of a high-usage facility like a water treatment plant, and it's strictly for that, that's a 40 percent offset." The committee also reported that its Green Communities grant application has been fully submitted and an award decision is expected by end of July, with members stressing the need to press school administrators to schedule construction work before the next school year begins.
