Deerfield Energy Committee Moves Toward July Meeting With No New Commitments

Deerfield Energy Conservation Committee discusses building assessments, bike infrastructure, and a possible Climate Leader retry. The committee, whose members include M.A. Swedeland, Jay Stryker, Bruce Dolan, Stephen Svoboda, David Gilbert Keith, and Pat Martin, met June 17 with no formal funding actions but surfaced several priorities: cycling through MassSave energy assessments for Town Hall, the police station, and the senior center; pursuing integration of mini-split units at Frontier Regional School and Deerfield Elementary School under a pending Green Communities grant targeting roughly $300,000 in building management hardware; and exploring whether the Pleasant Street sidewalk can be widened by a foot and a half to accommodate a shared-use pedestrian and bike path to DES.

Member Stephen Svoboda, citing his work for ISO New England, argued that 35 to 50 percent of the region's daily power already comes from behind-the-meter solar and that electrification "puts the power back in our hands." Finance Director Julie Chalfant attended to ask whether the committee had a long-term capital plan for energy upgrades she could incorporate into town financial planning; members said no formal priority list exists and that DOER will not fund a comprehensive building roadmap until the town achieves Climate Leader status. The committee voted unanimously to meet next on July 16 at 4 p.m.
