Open Space Committee backs $100K conservation fund proposal

Deerfield Open Space Committee tackles trail funding and playground plans. The committee discussed a pending $79,000 MassTrails grant application that includes three trail components — a 1.7-mile Connecticut Riverview Loop Trail, a River to Ridge connector, and rebuilding of a Pocumtuck Ridge Trail segment — with a response expected within 200 days. Chair Julie Caswell reported that the Community Preservation Committee approved a $100,000 Deerfield Conservation Fund with 6 votes for and 2 abstentions, with final reconsideration scheduled for February 18.
The committee unanimously established a Playground Subcommittee, with sites under consideration including behind the library and between the elementary school parking lot and football fields.
