Committee hears subcommittee updates on budget and building projects

DEERFIELD — The Connecting Community Initiative received extensive subcommittee updates at its March meeting on budget pressures and capital projects. Finance reported a $175,000 current deficit with confidence the town can proceed without a Proposition 2½ override, although the Southern Berkshire Career and Technical Education Center financing may require separate debt exclusion potentially reaching $700,000 annually. The 1888 Building renovation remains on track for October opening with solar and AV system contracts awarded; Library renovation, delayed by severe winter and tariffs, targets July opening with $1.53 million in fundraising.
The Tilton School is seeking solar bids for installation expected to cost the town 10,000 to 15,000 dollars with 30 percent federal tax credits available. The committee voted to contact Senators and Congressman McGovern regarding PL566 watershed-mitigation federal funding.
